ECS EliteGroup and Comsys Mobile announce unique multifunction mobile device using ComMAX™ multimode baseband processor

Feb. 9, 2009

9 February 2009: Herzliya, Israel – ECS EliteGroup Computer Systems and Comsys Communication & Signal Processing Ltd. today announced the launch of a second ECS mobile device featuring Comsys Mobile’s ComMAX chipset. ECS EliteGroup is launching its U170 eMAX model, a WiMAX USB modem dongle also functioning as a cellphone that, like the S370 Personal Internet Communicator introduced to the market last month, integrates the Comsys Mobile ComMAX CM1125 single-chip multimode mobile WiMAX/GSM-EDGE baseband processor.

The innovative U170 eMAX is an entirely new class of solution especially designed for the connected youth/student sector, providing a low-cost, compact device that functions both as a WiMAX USB modem dongle and a mobile phone. The device can be connected to any notebook/laptop computer to provide WiMAX functionality for internet/data service, or detached from the computer to function as a mobile phone for voice and SMS service. In addition to providing mobile WiMAX and GSM functionality, the ComMAX chip supports service continuity for converged mobile WiMAX/GSM-EDGE operators using standard MIP and IMS/VCC solutions.

“Although WiMAX operators are currently focused on data applications, they do understand the need for voice,” added Ehud Reshef, WiMAX Product Marketing Director of Comsys Mobile. “ECS EliteGroup’s vision in developing the U170 will provide an enormous boost for the WiMAX operators’ business case by helping to open up new consumer markets for WiMAX.”
“Comsys Mobile’s strategy for the ComMAX product range from the outset has been to provide dual mode cellular/Mobile WiMAX capability, and ECS EliteGroup’s product roadmap has endorsed this strategy for us,” he continued.

“The introduction of this new concept in mobile connectivity is expected to drive WiMAX adoption in developed markets,” commented Rex Chang, Vice President of ECS EliteGroup Computer Systems. “Achieving both the compact size and the target price/performance for the U170 has only been made possible by the use of the CM1125 WiMAX/EDGE baseband processor. This is our second collaboration with Comsys Mobile, and our mutual relationship has

proved an enormous asset to both companies. Our roadmap is for CM1125 to be implemented in a complete range of devices - from dongles, to laptops/notebooks, to low cost handsets and up to high-end Personal Internet Communicators.”

The U170 eMax is expected to be commercially available early in May 2009, and ECS will be supplying the device to several WiMAX operators in Taiwan as well as promoting it to WiMAX operators elsewhere in Asia, USA and emerging markets.

The U170 eMAX will be displayed at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, 16 – 19 February 2009, at Comsys Mobile’s booth #2B73 (Hall B) and at ECS EliteGroup’s booth #2G37.
